 Kappatat team and their coaches!

Service and philanthropy are of the utmost importance to the women of Beta Lambda.  Philanthropy events are not only an excellent opportunity for service, but also a chance to meet new people.  The women of Beta Lamda participate in a wide range of philanthropic events, ranging from fraternity obstacle courses that raise money for vaccinations at a local elementary school, to volunteering at our local hospitals, to the national event Relay for Life that benefits the American Cancer Society.  We Kappas strive to balance four areas of philanthropy: local fraternity and sorority events, our own philanthropy event that benefits our local Habitat for Humanity, Reading is Fundamental (RIF), and the Kappa Kappa Gamma foundation/Rose McGill Fund.

Kappatat
Each October, Kappas hosts a men's four-on-four double elimination volleyball tournament for fraternity and non-fraternity groups at the University of Illinois.  Women of the chapter are assigned to ‘coach’ the members of their team and cheer them on to the finals.
The tournament is very competitive for both the players and their coaches and is the highlight of the fall semester for Beta Lambda.  In the fall of 2008, our 15th annual Kappatat volleyball tournament earned over $2,000!  A portion of this was donated to the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation and the remainder was given to the Champaign-Urbana Habitat for Humanity.

RIF: Reading Is Fundamental
The Kappa Kappa Gamma fraternity has always believed that children are the key to our future, and at the 2004 Convention, we adopted RIF as our national philanthropy.
Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF).  This organization works to build a literate nation by helping young people discover the joy of reading.  RIF 's highest priority is to serve the nation's under-served children and families through the development and delivery of literacy programs and campaigns that motivate youth to read regularly.
During Fall 2006 formal recruitment, the women of Beta Lambda collected over 200 children’s books to donate to a local elementary school.  During the philanthropy party of recruitment, Kappas decorated these books by making
bookmarks and writing a personal note encouraging the child that received the book to keep reading!  The books were later presented in an all-school assembly to the local elementary school on behalf of Kappa Kappa Gamma and RIF.

Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation and Rose McGill Fund
A portion of the money that is earned from Kappatat is donated to the fraternity foundation yearly, as well as the Rose McGill Fund. The Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation donates money to support our women in their pursuit of the highest standards of scholarship, leadership, ethical principals and service.
Contributions to the foundation support scholarships and educational and leadership programming for all Kappas. The Rose McGill Fund was established in 1922 to provide confidential aid to Kappa alumna members with serious financial needs. We support the fund by active and alumni donations and magazine sales. Please call 1-800-KKG-ROSE if you are interested in subscribing to ANY magazine!
